Pictures from December/January. Buildings, nature, my animal, lights. These pictures are a taste of home, a reminder of where I am now and how lovely it can be just to be (even when I'm pining for being somewhere else). Also, I've somehow come to be a participant in Long Beach Zine Fest. My dear sweet amazing talented friend has offered part of her table to me and I shall do my best to create small works for eyes and minds to feast on. It's scary/exciting/crazy and I hope all my visions can come to some sort of reality. We'll see on April 24th if it all works out!

I've been reading Patti Smith's 'Just Kids' which is about her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe. I'm not generally one for memoirs or autobiographies, but 'Just Kids' has me pretty enthralled. Patti Smith is a damn good writer and her life both with and without Mapplethorpe is so intriguing.
This book has got to be one of the most inspiring books I've read and I can't really say why. Smith never delves into any sort of self-help/advice for the reader. She never addresses the reader, and yet I get the sense that Smith is aware of my presence and is writing this specifically for me. Maybe it's just that this is the book I need right now. Whatever it is, I am absolutely taken by Patti Smith's story, even if I still question the authenticity of memoirs in general (how much is romanticized? Remembered correctly?), I am impressed by Smith's honesty and willingness to share. I am quite the opposite and find it difficult to write openly about my personal life. Perhaps it's time I read more memoirs and learn to let go. Smith's relationship with Mapplethorpe is inspiring, although I have yet to finish the book so they may go through rough patches yet. So far I am enamored with their utter admiration for each other, with their total trust not only in each other as humans, but also as artists. Their relationship feels truly rare. That's enough rambling for now. I'll re-think some of this once I'm done with the book. Until then.... Your Broad, Dacy In conjunction with International Woman's Day, here's a little blurb about a little project by a most inspiring, hilarious, and talented lady. I'm lucky to have her as a close friend. She coordinated and produced a game of drawing telephone in the form of a zine. Each artist and writer had no idea who was before or after them until this past Sunday at LA Zinefest. It's a great little zine full of creativity and a sort of artistic unity that can sometimes be overlooked in the world of zines (where most artists are producing their own work). I'm happy and honored to say I got to be a part of the process. And I hope she continues the telephone zine because it's a lovely way to see how ideas and thoughts are interpreted and changed by the individual. I don't know if it can be purchased online, but her website is www.ellenmariebae.com and she has plenty of other great zines, stickers, and prints, She's an all around bad ass. Her stuff wants...no...needs to be a part of your life. Your Broad,
